High School varsity tennis letter 1964-65 Douglas Aircraft college scholarship My senior year I was awarded .08 Master Points by the American Contract Bridge League for my performance at the "Duplicate" tournaments, held at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont in 1967. USAF basic training. In 1968, I was awarded the American Spirit of Honor, for being an outstanding example to comrades in arms.
American Spirit Honor Medal The American Spirit Honor Medal is a bronze medallion presented by the Citizens Committee for the Army, Navy and Air Force to one outstanding recruit each week upon completion of basic training. It recognizes qualities like honor, initiative, loyalty and setting a high example for fellow trainees. The medal is 1⅜ inches (≈35 mm) in diameter but is worn only during the graduation ceremony and not on the uniform. Obverse (front) of the American Spirit Honor Medal. The face of the medal features a stylized sunburst behind a soaring American eagle. Around the edge is the legend “American Spirit Honor Medal”, with the committee’s motto “Serve with Heart, Head, and Hand” inscribed in the inner circle. These design elements – a bronze sunburst-and-eagle theme with raised lettering – match the official description in Army regulations Reverse (back) of the American Spirit Honor Medal. The back shows a raised hand holding a lit torch and bears the inscription “For High Example to Comrades in Arms.” This slogan reflects the medal’s purpose of honoring the recruit who best exemplifies leadership and loyalty during training.
